I would like to personally thank you for your support of our cause and welcome you to Awakenings Health Institute in San Diego, CA. Many years ago, I was involved in an auto accident, which left me paralyzed from my neck down due to a spinal cord injury. My dad and brothers came from the western approach to medicine while my mom came from the eastern to health. Together, they gave me the perfect recipe for hope, recovery, comfort and quality of life. After encountering a life changing traumatic experience, I had the opportunity to run through quality rehabilitation for the mind, body, and soul without any interruptions. I could not have done it without the support of family, friends, and other helpful resources.
Money is and always will be an issue for anybody struggling to pay medical bills. I know this firsthand, but again; I was fortunate to not have this common obstacle stand in the way of my rehabilitation. Most are not so lucky and are often compelled to forgo a proactive lifestyle to ensure basic survival.
In 2003 we began the process to begin a non-profit organization catering to people with traumatic injuries such as spinal cord injury, stroke, and traumatic brain injury. I named it Awakenings, after the movie featuring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams. Our vision was to fill the void where medical rehabilitation left off. Rehab would be affordable, positive….and fun!
We finally opened the AHI facility a couple years later with many therapists from various fields. As time passed we condensed the large group down to five devoted and hardworking people. I have never met nor worked with such a caring group of individuals. Their vision and dream was synergistic with mine. We delved into the real problems resulting from these types of injuries. This program would not only stand the test of time, but it had potential to change the face of healthcare.
This journey has allowed me to repay the favor society has given to me by giving back to our community. I hope with our community's help and support, our incredibly fun, loving, and caring staff can provide the same care for you and your families.
To health and to life!
