We would like to extend our warments welcome to Barbara Clark, who will be joining us on Wednesdays. Barbara is kind enough to extend, free of charge, an amazing and powerful, light-touch therapy called Jin Shin Acutouch. Read on to learn more about it.

Pilates with Andrea
We are pleased to offer Pilates sessions with Andrea Plichta. This is an amazing companion to anyone's workout routine. It incorporates purposeful, deep breathing with specific muscle movements to encourage "core stability" for a strong center, balanced and toned muscles, and quality biomechanics. A constant practice of Pilates can help to increase circulation, overall lung function, and strengthen postural muscles, adding integrity to the spine. These appointments are open to anyone and can be combined with any client’s training. To schedule a session, please call us at 858.794.9952 or email at info@awakeningshealth.org
Jin Shin with Barbara Clark
For the past 30+ years, Barbara has practiced and taught the ancient healing art of Jin Shin Acutouch. It comes to us from the Oriental Traditions and natural medicine. It's a simple yet powerful system that can be used either as a treatment for health concerns and injuries, or as preventive measures to maintain health, energy, and a positive well-being.
It works by lightly touching and holding (but not massaging) 2 specific points on the body at the same time. This allows the energy to flow in its proper patterns and to strengthen the body. The hands act as “jumper cables,” causing the body’s energy to flow freely from 1 point to another. The result, one’s vital life force is reenergized, recharged, and wonderfully relaxed.
Barbara teaches Jin Shin at the International Professional School of Bodywork. For more information on Jin Shin or Barbara’s work, check out www.jadedragon.com or email Barbara at BClarkjinshin@aol.com.
To schedule a session with Barbara at AHI, please call 858.794.9952 or reach us at info@awakeningshealth.org.

AHI in conjuction with Barbara Clark, Jin Shin practitioner extraordinare, and company will be offering a free Jin Shin clinic. It is open to all peeps with spinal cord injury or neurological disorder. It will be held on Aug, 20th from 6:30-9:30. Please call 858.794.9952 to sign up.
Let's Welcome Ardi Galash:
We want to extend a warm greeting of hello to Ardi Galash. Some of you may have already heard about Ardi or experienced his work. He will be joining us on Mondays offering energy, healing sessions, both by the hour and 1/2 hour.
Ardi comes to us with years of healing experience. He is a 7th generation Tibetan Monk-healer, educated by the Tibetan Lamas. He has been trained in massage therapy, hypnotherapy, physical therapy, and various energy modalities. Years ago, Ardi sustained a serious injury that left him paralyzed with loss of speech and memory. He strongly feels that it is his life's calling to give back and help others heal as he was healed.
Private appointments can be scheduled with the front desk. Please call 858.794.9952 for more information, fees or to schedule your session today.
Active Stimulus Rebound Therapy (ASRT) w/ Dr. Charlene Penner
We are excited to have Dr. Penner join us between 1:00 and 6:00 on Fridays starting August 1, offering individual client sessions for an hourly fee. She brings with her an awesome healing technique, ASRT. It is a gentle yet powerful form of bodywork, aimed specifically at re-establishing damaged, nerves and muscles. The foundation principle of ASRT is to strengthen through challenge. Dr. Penner will provide resistance to an area of weakness as the client counters the pressure. In cases of paralysis, with proper body placement, a mental connection, and therapist assistance, often a reflex can be elicited as the nervous system receives the message and sensory input. Repetitive stimulation of these reflex points encourages the movements previously lost through disease or injury.
Dr. Penner has practiced for over 30 years and currently teaches at the International Professional School of Bodywork located in San Diego. For additional information on Dr. Penner or to sign up for an appointment, please call 858.794.9952.
Free Massage
We love free stuff and what could be better than a free massage. We have teamed up with some amazing and caring IPSB College students to "give back" to our community.
Every Tuesday and Friday from July 25-August 19th we will be scheduling massage appointments.
Call 858.794.9952 to claim your free massage before all slots are filled.
Gait Trainer
We are now offering, to the general public, gait training sessions to all individuals with any type of spinal cord injury, neurological disorder, or physical disability. Some of you may already know about the Robomedica Gait Trainer and incorporate it into your work out routines. If it is not part of your normal therapy, you might consider trying it. It's a unique device that consists of a treadmill and body supported harness. It is electronically controlled as therapists provide manual assistance to simulate the action of walking.
Studies have shown that with regular use, the benefits can be plentiful. We recommend 3 to 5 sessions per week, for one hour each. The upright position encourages normalization of blood pressure, increases circulation, builds core strength for balance and coordination, and maintains bone density. The movement helps to work out painful muscle spasms, gain strength, and improve posture. Repetition helps the body "remember" the action of walking.
Call 858.794.9952 to find out how gait training can enhance your training efforts.
Working Together Conference
On June 20th and 21st, 2008 Awakenings Health Institute hosted the 1st annual ‘Working Together’ Conference. It was a gathering of 10 intensive exercise-based spinal cord injury rehabilitation facilities, unified in the common goal of maximizing health, wellness, and quality of life for individuals with paralysis.
It was our goal to increase awareness of the services we provide and how we can better fill the void following the end of medically established, acute rehabilitation for spinal cord injury.
